Under the banner of Yuva tourism club we students along with 4 teachers Mrs. Ashu mam , Ms Suresh mam , Mr. Amit sir , Mr. Vijay sir went for excursion to Suketi fossil park on 19th April 2023 Our aim was to discover local tourist sites . To know the geological -historical evolution of our district Sirmour . The fossil park in Suketi is the first park in Asia from where fossil are discovered from lower Himalayan region. Skeletons and fossils of pre-historic animals found here are as old as 8.5 million years ago. Shivaliks where the park is located are said to have the world’s largest number of mammalian fossils. Whether they’re skeletons of elephants or the remains of the trees that lived long ago , fossils at suketi fossil park can transport people back through the eons . It gives people an opportunity to peep into the world of the ancient earth . The park has been built and regulated by the Geological Survey of India and Himachal Pradesh Tourism . Many scholars across the country visit the Suketi fossil park for research work. Located within 21 km. from Nahan, the park is nestled on the edge of the Markanda River . The Suketi fossil park is famous for its six life –size reinforced models of Stegodon Ganesa , Sivatherium , Colosschelys Atlas , Paramachaerdus , Hexaprotodon-Sivalensis and Crocodilia. Such huge and large creatures really wondered in our district 20-33 lakh years ago. Within the confines of the Park , there is a museum as well, which gives researchers and scientist an opportunity to scrutinize about animals and their surroundings . The park and the museum in the fossil park are well maintained by the horticulture department of Himachal Pradesh . The museum exhibits fossils, models, charts, and paintings related to the various aspects of plants and animals. fossil wood and tools made by early man are also displayed . We were astonished and excited to know that most of the fossils belong to our own district and particularly they were found very near to our school as in peepalwala and nearby villages.
