As part of World Tourism Celebrations 2023, a scuba diving trip to Coral nursery was organized by Ministry of Tourism, Southern Regional Office in association with Department of Tourism, Lakshadweep Tourism Development Corporation and Department of Science & Technology, Lakshadweep on September 24, 2023. Inspired by the Travel for LiFE program of Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, this initiative aimed at sensitizing the younger generation about need for preservation and safeguarding of nature. Coral nurseries are an underwater eco-tourism site developed by the Department of Science and Technology, Lakshadweep under the Coral Restoration Programme with an aim to promote and facilitate reef conservation through planting corals in the lagoons. 29 students of Yuva Tourism Club and NCC cadets of Government Senior Secondary School, Kavaratti Island, Lakshadweep participated in the event. A special address was given by Dr. Idrees Babu, a renowned scientist from Lakshadweep on "Coral Nurseries and the Need for Reef Restoration" followed by a briefing session on scuba diving essentials. The fragile ecology of the pristine islands of Lakshadweep depends heavily on the health of corals in the lagoons.
