Our Department of Hotel Management and Catering Science celebrated World Tourism Day on September 27, 2024. As a part of the celebrations, our students engaged in a community activity at Mukkombu, one of the important tourist spots in Tiruchirappalli, by conducting an awareness campaign to educate tourists on the importance of enjoying tourism without disturbing the ecosystem. A field visit for our department's students was organized at Anna Planetarium, Tiruchirappalli, on Monday, September 23, 2024. Twenty-five students from the B.Sc. Hotel Management and Catering Science program participated in this visit, accompanied by our faculty members, Mr. S. Yoganand and Mr. S. Samuel Anand Kumar. The visit commenced at 10 a.m., and the team spent nearly two and a half hours exploring the premises of the planetarium and viewing the various exhibits on display. The planetarium is conveniently located near Tiruchirappalli International Airport. Established on June 10, 1999, the Anna Science Centre aims to educate the new generation and the general public, in line with the mission of the Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre. The centre is particularly popular among school and college students, offering educational services that highlight the relationship between science and the environment. The educational gallery features numerous exhibits that demonstrate the effects of biodiversity, conservation, ecosystem themes, pollution, sustainable energy sources, and biogeochemical cycles. Financial support for this educational facility was provided by the Indian Oil Corporation Limited. The Planetarium: “The Source of Planets and Galaxies” The planetarium is the main attraction of the Anna Science Centre and is well worth a visit. This significant project, along with its accessories, was donated by the Government of Japan under the Cultural Grant-in-Aid Scheme. The planetarium contains about 11 galleries, each illustrating the characteristics of various natural energies, the Earth, and advancements in science and technology. It serves as a favourite educational spot and a source of inspiration for all the generations. Educational institutions from surrounding areas such as Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Perambalur, Karur, and Dindigul frequently organize trips for students to the Anna Science Centre to enhance their knowledge of science and technology. Science enthusiasts will find a wealth of information and inspiration here. The planetarium's amphitheatre features advanced technology for presenting shows in both Tamil and English. Tamil shows are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 3:30 p.m., while English shows take place at 11:45 a.m., 2:15 p.m., and 4:45 p.m. The students thoroughly enjoyed the visit, expressing that they gained valuable knowledge about the history, growth, and development of Anna Planetarium and “The Source of Planets and Galaxies,” as well as its contributions to education, and research.
